Blakemore Logistics has demonstrated its commitment to road safety with the purchase of two Mercedes-Benz Econic vehicles.

The five star safety rated Econic has a deep, panoramic windscreen and a full-length, folding side door allowing the driver, who sits much lower than in a conventional distribution vehicle, to make direct eye contact with cyclists and pedestrians.

The vehicles also feature nearside sensors, including an in-cab display unit with a warning buzzer for additional safety.

The Econic’s low-entry cab has just two steps rather than the conventional four, which reduces the risk of access and egress injuries for the driver.

Blakemore Logistics Compliance Manager Dave Higgs commented: “A.F. Blakemore is committed to responsible business practices, and the new vehicles not only offer improved fuel efficiency to minimise our environmental impact but also the latest technology to maximise driver and road user safety.

“Both vehicles will operate from Blakemore Logistics’ Hastings depots to routes in and around central London, making the Econic perfectly placed to reinforce our commitment to road safety in heavily populated pedestrian and cyclist areas.”

When asked about his driving experience in the new Mercedes Econic vehicle, Blakemore Logistics Class 2 Driver James Garnham said: “I have a lot more confidence when driving in London in the Mercedes Econic due to its improved visibility, especially when pulling out of junctions as you have a greater sense of what and who is around the vehicle.

“I also feel a lot safer in the lorry in heavy traffic and when manoeuvring the vehicle at the delivery point.”
