Coming Soon: Environment Week

March 25, 2022

Environment Week

A.F. Blakemore is inviting all colleagues to get involved in Environment Week next month.

With a focus on sustainability and tackling climate change, the event will celebrate the company’s value ‘We build a better future’ and run from Monday 4th to Friday 8th April.

We are asking you to be a good ally to the environment by getting yourself and your teams involved, supporting the activities and participating where you can.

Here are just some of the things you can do to get involved and make a difference:

Take part in a litter pick in your local area

We will be running litter picks up and down A.F. Blakemore's estate to help improve the communities in which we serve. If you haven’t already been in contact and would like to get involved, please register your interest at SM-Community@afblakemore.co.uk now. They’re a great way to get out into the sunshine and meet new colleagues for an hour while you do something good for both the environment and community. With litter picks based around our head office locations as well as our store estate, everyone can get involved!

Enter AFB’s ‘Bug Hotel’ competition

Building a bug hotel in your garden can provide a safe hideaway for wildlife and help make use of your garden waste. A well-built hotel can shelter anything from hedgehogs to toads, solitary bees to bumblebees, and ladybirds to woodlice. Even on a small scale, by filling a plant pot or container with some sticks, you’ll be providing insects with a much-needed habitat to survive – and we need insects to survive to be able to survive ourselves! Studies show UK insect numbers have been declining rapidly due to humans and loss of habitat, so let’s do our bit to give them a home. Send in a photo of your ‘bug hotel’ and the winner will receive a Summer Allotment Starter Pack. Everyone who enters will receive a pack of wildflower seeds to plant wherever they wish. Would like more details? Get in contact today.

Lunch and learn sessions

Confused about environmental jargon? Meet Environmental Sustainability Manager Darshika Patel, who will be running a 30-minute jargon-busting session on the environment, climate change and the circular economy on Tuesday 5th April, as well as a 30-minute “Why is Nature Important?” session on Thursday 7th. Both sessions are open to all and will take place on Teams. The sessions will start at 12pm and will be recorded for those who cannot attend live. Register your interest at SM-Community@afblakemore.co.uk for either session.

Coming soon: onsite clothes recycling points and Blakemore book swap shelves

Look out across our head office locations for on-site clothes recycling points and bookshelves that will be appearing over the coming months.

Environment Week newsletter

We will be sending out a special e-newsletter to all colleagues in the week commencing 4th April that will include various materials such as a sustainability fact sheet with tips and tricks for colleagues on how to be more sustainable, some advice on how to reduce food waste as well as an Environment Week quiz. Colleagues that score full marks on the quiz will be entered into a quiz draw to be in with a chance of winning a £20 voucher.

If you have any questions or require any support, please contact us at SM-Community@afblakemore.co.uk
