Bal Mehmi Nominated for Women in Meat Award

August 22, 2022

Meat Trader Bal Mehmi from Blakemore Fresh Foods has been nominated for a Meat Businesswoman Award at the national Women in Meat Industry Awards (WIMIA).

The Women in Meat Industry Awards recognise the contribution and talent of women across all sectors of the business. Bal has made the shortlist for the Meat Businesswoman Award in the Wholesaling category.

Bal commented: “I am delighted to be recognised at these awards, especially as there aren’t many women working in roles such as mine or the meat trade in general. I am very proud of the work I do, importing meat from all over the world, and this award nomination is very exciting.”

Bal joined A.F. Blakemore in 1990 as an administration clerk. In 2000 she supported the implementation of a new IT system into the business.

In 2005 Bal then moved into sales and purchasing. Assisting traders with administration, she started to create her own call list of customers. Today, she is very much integral to the lamb and mutton trade, with responsibilities across both buying and selling and sales in excess of £5 million.

Once voting has taken place, the winners will be announced at a black-tie dinner and awards ceremony on 11th November at the five-star Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London.

Good luck Bal!
