Blakemore Retail Goes Purple for Purple Tuesday

Purple Tuesday

Blakemore Retail colleagues dressed up and decorated their stores in purple this week to show their support for disability awareness event Purple Tuesday.

Purple Tuesday, which took place on 2nd November this year, is an annual campaign that aims to improve the customer experience for disabled people, 365 days a year.

In the UK alone, the spending power of disabled people and their families is worth £274 billion, yet less than 10% of organisations have a targeted plan to access the disability market.

In the lead up to Purple Tuesday, Blakemore Retail colleagues completed an online disability awareness training course designed in-house to raise awareness of disabilities, including those that are hidden, and improve their confidence when interacting with disabled customers.

The training promoted effective communication techniques and ways to create a positive customer experience, as well as practical steps that colleagues can take to make stores more accessible.

Blakemore Retail began supporting Purple Tuesday in 2018 when it was first launched by disability organisation Purple. The following year, Purple CEO Mike Adams OBE visited A.F. Blakemore’s head office to commend the business on its training and help it look at further measures it can take to make stores as disability friendly as possible.

Blakemore Retail Operations Director Chris Bacon commented: “As a business that strives to be inclusive for customers and colleagues, Blakemore Retail is proud to support Purple Tuesday.

“Disability awareness training is a great starting point for giving colleagues the knowledge and confidence to support people with additional needs in their local communities.

“We hope that through education and awareness-raising activities we can start to make the long-term changes to make a real and positive difference to disabled people.”
