James Russell Cycles Cambodia for Charity

March 02, 2020

The fundraising team

Blakemore Wholesale Distribution Managing Director James Russell joined a team of 33 UK convenience and wholesale retail sector colleagues to cycle more than 500km through Cambodia for charity in February.

The team of superheroes cycled across the country for six days, facing extreme heat and challenging terrain.

Money raised will go towards the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), to help the organisation achieve its vision of a world free from the threat of landmines and unexploded bombs.

James commented: “This was a wonderfully worthwhile challenge, providing the opportunity to network across the industry, really test ourselves and make a real difference to people’s lives.”

Every day, 19 people are reported killed or injured by a landmine or unexploded bomb, with many more deaths going unreported. There are currently 60 million people living in fear of death and injury from these indiscriminate killers.

The Mines Advisory Group finds, removes and destroys these deadly items from places affected by conflict, from Angola to Vietnam, and Bosnia to Zimbabwe. It also provides mine risk education programmes so that people can live, work, travel and play as safely as possible until the land is cleared.

While in Cambodia, the team actually visited a minefield being cleared by MAG in the village of Khang Tboung. The site has now been cleared of some 45 mines, with 62 acres being returned to villagers to use meaningfully for the first time in 50 years.

Thanking everyone who supported his fundraising, James commented: “The boost that I got from the support at home was huge on what was a tough ride. I really appreciate everyone’s generosity.

“As a group we set out to raise £150k to continue to contribute to clearing minefields across the world. We are driving closer to that target every day and appreciate your support.

“Your contributions have made a significant difference to the lives and economies in rural Cambodia – thank you again for your support.”

So far the cycling team has raised an incredible £113,000. If you would like to donate to James’s fundraiser, please visit his JustGiving page here:

On the lighter side of things, the fundraisers have also pulled together a little video of their challenge: Check it out and see if you recognise anyone!
