Bedford Depot Construction Update

The construction of A.F. Blakemore’s brand new distribution depot in Bedford has made significant progress over the past few weeks.

In August last year the company announced that it had set its sights on a purpose-built warehouse in Bedford as part of ambitious growth plans.

AFB has agreed a 20-year lease on a 164,850 sq ft multi-temperature distribution facility on Manton Lane and is due to take occupancy in 2021.

McClaren Construction started work on the site in April, with the first steels erected in early July.

Providing an update, Group Logistics Manager Marc Deakin said, “Work is progressing well on-site, with the external cladding finished and some fit-out works now being completed.

“We expect that we’ll have a watertight building in the next four weeks, to enable progress to continue inside during the winter.

“The AFB workstream leads are working through the hundreds of tasks required to set the depot up and make sure we’re operational on schedule – all work is currently on track and we’ve received a fantastic effort to date from everyone concerned.”

If all goes according to plan, the depot will be able to start operating from mid-2021.

A number of working groups involving colleagues across AFB have been established to manage the depot setup and launch, looking at workstreams such as operations, IT, staff recruitment and fitting out the property.

The new Manton Lane site will complement the company’s existing network of distribution centres and will provide the business with additional supply-chain capacity to support targeted growth across its retail and wholesale divisions.

The depot is an exciting development for A.F. Blakemore and reflects the company’s confidence in its future.

Having a greater presence across the country will strengthen A.F. Blakemore’s reputation as a national food distributor, enable it to continue to improve its service to customers and ensure the long-term sustainability of the business.

Having the depot purpose built will also provide the company with a great opportunity to focus on staff facilities and environmental features.
