Virtual assembly

Blakemore Retail's fundraising for the NSPCC has helped the charity to hold a special virtual assembly to talk to children about mental health in the pandemic.

Amid growing concerns about the impact of Covid-19 on children’s safety and mental health and wellbeing, the NSPCC organised its second virtual ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ assembly on Facebook on 23rd February, featuring TV presenters Ant and Dec and a guest appearance from comedian David Walliams.

The NSPCC has been Blakemore Retail's charity partner since 2006, and to date stores have raised more than £3.9 million for the good cause.

The broadcast is suitable for children aged five and over, and it aims to help them understand how to speak to a trusted adult if they feel anxious or worried.

Included is information about Childline, which has delivered around 19,000 counselling sessions each month throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

The NSPCC’s first online assembly in June last year received more than 100,000 views on Facebook and YouTube.

The NSPCC’s Janet Hinton commented: "The lockdown has turned the lives of children upside down and many are struggling to cope with the challenges it has posed.

"Although our trained ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ staff can’t currently go into schools, it is essential that every child knows who they can turn to if they need help and support.

“After watching the assembly, parents and carers can continue this conversation with their children by visiting the NSPCC website where they can find additional activities."
