An army of 40 volunteers from Blakemore Trade Partners has donated 520 hours of employee time to supporting a youth project in South Wales.

Volunteers from the division’s Trading department rolled up their sleeves and spent two days regenerating the Fernhill Youth Project in Mid Glamorgan, South Wales.

Employees were tasked with painting the communal and kitchen areas inside the centre, restoring and painting a wooden memorial bench, turning over a large area of land for the project to use for vegetables and building six workbenches to be used within the polytunnel. In addition, employees used their IT expertise to clean up the youth centre’s IT software.

The team also donated an iPad Mini and 32” flat screen TV to the project.

The Fernhill Youth Project provides a safe, warm place where young people can socialise, have fun, try new activities, learn new skills and help create trust and respect for each other and their community. The project offers a variety of opportunities enabling young people to grow in confidence, increase self-esteem and participate in practical and physical activities that they would not be able to experience otherwise.

Blakemore Trade Partners Trading Director Rupert Morris said: “Volunteering in the community is something we really enjoy and it is very gratifying for us as a company to see the tangible and positive changes that our work can bring. Fernhill Youth Project appreciated what we did and we develop ourselves as a team when we work together away from the office.

“It was great that the young people from the project picked the colour scheme used for the inside areas; the paint pots used run from Luscious Lime and Tangerine Twist to Blue Lagoon and Denim Drift. The whole place is a riot of colour and the young people will love it.

“Thank you to Simon from BITC Cymru for his help. We had a very productive few days and plan to continue rolling up our sleeves for the community and for ourselves”.

Fernhill Youth Project Co-ordinator Beverley Morgan added: “We are overwhelmed by the amazing work your volunteers put in to our youth project and polytunnel garden. Our young people, volunteers and staff love the colour scheme and are extremely happy with the new TV.

“The upgraded computers will be of considerable help for our young people to access. Our polytunnel garden is absolutely awesome and will hopefully attract new volunteers and community members. A massive thank you to you all for being so kind and generous."
