26 employee volunteers from across A.F. Blakemore donated their time to making a positive difference to local communities as part of Business in the Community’s national day of volunteering.

Employee volunteers from A.F. Blakemore’s Retail and Trade Partners divisions took part in community volunteering events on 11th and 12th May alongside hundreds of businesses across the UK in support of Give & Gain Day 2017.

This year marked the tenth year of Business in the Community’s Give & Gain Day, which was set up to help businesses understand and connect with their communities with the long-term goal being to create mutually beneficial relationships.

In the West Midlands, volunteers from Blakemore Trade Partners took part in leading “Fit for Fun”, an athletics event at Tipton Sports Academy involving schools in the local area. The day promoted fun physical activity and healthy living.

Spirits were not dampened despite the bad weather and volunteers and students alike enjoyed an active day.

In North Wales, employees from Blakemore Retail SPAR Rhos, Coedpoeth, Baschurch, Crewe, Llangollen, Chirk, Gresford, Coleham, Wrexham, Caergwrle and Monkmoor along with colleagues from the Blakemore Trade Partners development team, spent the day at Rhos Rugby Club clearing the driveway, planting flowers and turfing as part of the club’s plans to transform the ground into a local asset.

Rhos Rugby Club runs teams and provides training sessions for adults and juniors as well as children with additional needs. It is hoped that with further development to the grounds the club will become an integral part of the community.

Coedpoeth Store Manager Sarah Edwards commented: “It was an amazing day! Looking at the before and after shots we definitely deserve to be proud of our achievement. Well done team!

“Thank you to Ann, Allun and Richard from the rugby club for their help and hospitality throughout the day.”

Community Affairs Officer Liz Bell added: “I am thrilled that staff once again rolled up their sleeves in aid of Give & Gain Day. It is important for the business to continue to strengthen its links to the community by allowing staff to participate and give back.

“It is also great for staff to gain new skills and experience outside of their normal work environment that can be filtered back into their roles.”
