Community Volunteering Steps Up in Logistics

December 31, 2018

Community volunteering across Blakemore Logistics stepped up a gear as Christmas approached, with employees donating more than 560 hours of work time to community groups.

During December volunteers from four departments across Blakemore Logistics left their work stations to support three local community groups with painting, gardening and Christmas wrapping projects.

To kick off the month, the Blakemore Logistics Ambient depot started a week-long gardening project with charity and social enterprise Ideal for All at their community allotments in Darlaston. The team, led by Jon Davis, battled the weather to build compost bins and a recycled-plastic walkway.

Ideal for All was then supported for a second week by staff from the Chilled and Recycling depots. The team, led by Adrian Swatman, transformed the inside of a poly tunnel by preparing the ground and then laying down a 17ft-long membrane. They also made useable walkways around the poly tunnel.

Meanwhile, Llwynpia Boys and Girls Community Centre in South Wales had the benefit of staff from Logistics and Creative Print across two days. Colleagues painted several rooms and fitted vinyl.

David Addis, a trustee from Llwynpia Boys and Girls Community Centre, commented: “The trustees are retired and work really hard to keep the place open but have no experience of development or funding streams to move the centre to the next level.

"The volunteers didn’t just do the job but they did a good job. If they saw that something needed two coats they made sure that's what they did rather than rushing to finish."

The month of community activity was finished off just before Christmas by four members of the Willenhall Transport team, who spent a morning at Birmingham City Mission wrapping gifts for 15 families who had been referred to the good cause as they would not otherwise receive any Christmas presents.
