We published our Gender Pay Gap Report a few months ago, and, like all businesses across the UK, shining a light on this one area of diversity has sparked many conversations about how we can be better.

Last year we formed an Equality, Inclusion and Diversity Steering Group (which I hope isn’t news to you!). Since then we have analysed statistics, pulled together focus groups to get your opinions and networked with other companies to understand what good looks like.

From this we created our EID Strategy. In this we decided that if we are going to meaningfully tackle increasing our diversity across all parts of the business, and become a more equal and a more inclusive place to work, then we need to make sure we are starting from a firm base.

This means that we need to have a base level of understanding around our business, a common language, similar to what the Blakemore Way has become. So that before focussing on one area of diversity, we have to make sure we are as inclusive a company as possible, and at the very heart of inclusivity, is the key message that it’s about us all, together.

And so, we’ve set about hosting Equality, Inclusion and Diversity Sessions where we touch on the key themes we believe we need to address, but most importantly sessions where we can consult with you on how you think we can further develop our future strategy.

So far we’ve hosted 17 sessions with 137 colleagues participating and many more scheduled, all delivered internally by our wonderful AFB team – a special thank you to them.

Your feedback following these sessions has been fantastic: not only has the average evaluation score been 8.4/10 but the engagement in the sessions has been really positive and you have provided some really valuable insights and ideas which the team are compiling into themes for us to discuss, in depth, at our next steering group. So watch this space!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your involvement in our 100th anniversary that we will conclude in September.

To recognise this we will be publishing two commemorative publications in the autumn: a supplement in conjunction with the Express & Star newspaper that will be distributed to all colleagues plus a limited edition hard back annual that will celebrate the history of AFB.

Our final activity will be a draw with 100 prizes up for grabs for all those who enter. We’ve tried to make the 100th birthday as inclusive and far spreading as possible, and this final part continues on this theme. You will all have the same opportunity to win 1 of 100 prizes – from charitable donations and cycle-to-work Halford’s vouchers to my favourite, an extra day’s annual leave!
