Peter’s View

February 2018

This month’s Peter’s View has been guest edited by Community Affairs Officer Liz Blakemore:

Liz

I feel very privileged to have been asked to guest edit this month’s Peter’s View. I have chosen to focus on the company’s Branching Out programme and how this can inspire young people to join our business.

Branching Out, our education programme, was created to help bridge the gap between education and employment. The activities completed with schools are designed to inspire, promote and engage young people in developing successful careers and help meet skills gaps in the future.

Colleagues can get involved in a large variety of activities with schools, ranging from reading volunteering to study tours, career talks and enterprise events.

These activities are run by staff members who are experts in their area – this could be apprentices or graduates discussing why they chose their career routes after school, or accountants discussing the opportunities in their field and the skills needed.

Since Branching Out was launched in January 2017, it has been used to highlight job opportunities within the business, especially apprenticeship roles. The programme has played a vital part in attracting more quality apprentices into the business, and this, I believe, will continue to develop.

With several recruitment channels to attract young people into our business, including apprenticeship and graduate schemes, it is vital that we equip young people with the ‘soft’ skills to excel in their careers. This is more than being a philanthropic business; it is tackling business risks such as having an aging workforce and roles that are difficult to fill with effective recruitment tools.

We can’t stand still; we have to move now. My aim as a next generation family member is to inspire people through our education programme so that they want to choose us for their career, and to help A.F. Blakemore become nationally recognised as an employer of choice for young people and a trailblazer for numerous different types of apprenticeships!

The young people of today are our future leaders of tomorrow and our job is to inspire them to want to work for us at A.F. Blakemore.
