Peter’s View

November 2017

As you know this year has seen Blakemores and SPAR reach significant milestones in their history.

Blakemores moving into the second 100 years of its existence and SPAR celebrating 60 years of trading in the UK.

These are important achievements that demonstrate the ability of both organisations to adapt and change over many years. We must always provide our customers with what they require in the most attractive and efficient way possible.

The whole food retail and wholesale sectors are currently undergoing massive changes. We must constantly look at how we are organised and do business to remain relevant and competitive.

The competitive landscape will undergo some dramatic changes over the next two to three months as the Competition and Markets Authority comes to a decision regarding the Tesco and Booker merger and other competitors NISA, Palmer & Harvey amongst others decide their future.

What is certain is that we will face new challenges and opportunities when these changes take place. We need to ensure that we take full advantage of these opportunities as many customers of our competitors will want to assess their options when the ownership of their main supplier changes. Being supplied by and having the same consumer offer as a major local competitor will cause retailers to look to see the alternative fascias available to them.

They will certainly look hard at companies that have a long and enduring track record of stability and innovation. Companies such as Blakemores and SPAR.
