Recycling Centre
![]()
To help retail customers to reduce their environmental impact, Blakemore Logistics operates its own recycling centre.
The centre represents a £700,000 investment from A.F. Blakemore and provides facilities to recycle cardboard, polyplastics, aluminium, paper, glass and clothes.
Waste food is also processed at an anaerobic digestion plant, which generates biogas to supply the National Grid and agricultural supplements.
Stores may now recycle waste packaged food, paper, soft plastic, bottles and cans, which are backhauled as part of the distribution process.
The impact of the centre upon Blakemore Logistics has been huge and has resulted in 96.2% of the division’s overall waste being recycled. The amount of waste sent to landfill has been reduced from 157 to 119 tonnes over the past 12 months.
Not only does the recycling operation reduce stores’ impact upon the environment but it also helps to minimise the rising costs associated with waste disposal.
A.F. Blakemore also works in partnership with suppliers to increase the amount of chilled products that are delivered into distribution depots via returnable packaging. Around 16% of products were delivered in returnable packaging in 2010/11, as opposed to 14.7% in 2009/10.
