The central Learning & Development (L&D) department is responsible for the creation and organisation of both compliance training and employee development, to support A.F. Blakemore and Son Ltd in meeting its business strategy through its people.

Central to the development strategy is the internally designed performance management system, Growing You the Blakemore Way. The competency based review and target setting system ensures that both the participant and line manager have constructive dialogue in which feedback is given on performance and future development opportunities.

Out of the performance review will come a number of development objectives, and these are picked up in a number of ways. A significant number of objectives will be addressed through on-the-job coaching and support, some will be through professional or vocational courses and the remainder through bespoke initiatives developed and delivered by the central L&D team.

It was identified that a management development programme was required by the business and to address this need, A.F. Blakemore became an accredited Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) centre in 2010. This allows the L&D team to design bespoke AFB management programmes around our values, policies and commitment to Investors in People (IIP), whilst delivering a nationally recognised qualification. To become an ILM approved centre, the L&D department went through a rigours quality assessment and will continue to be monitored by ILM to ensure that we maintain the standard.

Time is spent evaluating the impact of our development initiatives in order to allow us to report on the effectiveness of our training. A number of our development programmes incorporate work based projects to ensure that the skills learnt are applied within the work place and that a measurable impact is delivered to the business.
