October 10, 2018

More than 5,000 employees from across Blakemore Retail SPAR stores will undertake disability awareness training in support of the UK’s first accessible shopping day, Purple Tuesday (November 13).

Over a four week period from Monday October 15th an online awareness campaign, highlighting practical ways to support customers with physical, learning and mental disabilities will be rolled out to all Blakemore Retail SPAR employees.

The online learning module will promote effective communication, how to create a positive customer experience as well as practical ways to ensure all stores are disability friendly. In addition, the module aims to raise awareness of hidden disabilities.

In addition to the online awareness training colleagues will be encouraged to host a variety of purple themed activities in store to celebrate Purple Tuesday on November 13th.

Purple Tuesday is the UK’s first accessible shopping day, established by disability organisation Purple, to recognise the importance and needs of disabled consumers, raise awareness of the value of the Purple Pound and promote inclusive shopping.

Blakemore Retail Training & Development Manager Kerry Hunt commented: “We are extremely proud to be supporting Purple Tuesday in our Blakemore Retail SPAR convenience stores.

“We hope the online training modules and in store campaigns will enable our colleagues to provide the best possible shopping experience to all our customers.”

CEO of Purple Mike Adams OBE said: “We established Purple Tuesday to raise awareness of the everyday barriers disabled people may face when shopping and to encourage retailers to see the value of ensuring their services are as accessible as possible.

"We are delighted Blakemore Retail are an official supporter of Purple Tuesday and are working to make their shopping experience disability confident across their stores”.
