Corporate Responsibility

Blakemore Retail operates a successful retail business that has been built upon a commitment to ensuring that we have a positive influence on the way we treat our staff, our customers, the communities in which we trade and the environment. 

We break our corporate responsibility programme down into the key areas of the workplace, marketplace, community and environment. 

Below is a list of some of our key activity within each area:  
 

Workplace:

Investors in People
Since December Blakemore Retail has been recognised as an Investors in People employer. In February 2016 Blakemore Retail was awarded the highly prestigious Silver standard, which is held by just three per cent of companies that have achieved the Investors in People standard. 

Training
Blakemore Retail delivers training to employees at all levels throughout the business. Our aim is to continue to develop our training strategy in order to meet the needs of the business and develop the people within it. 

Consultation
Blakemore Retail has several established initiatives in place to communicate with employees. These include staff consultation groups, managers forums, conferences and meetings.  We also conduct an annual colleague survey that allows us to measure and act upon the opinions of our employees.

Employee Benefits 
Blakemore Retail has a dedicated staff benefits package, Blakemore Retail Rewards, which offers an extensive range of benefits.  This includes staff discounts in Blakemore Retail stores, a pension scheme, childcare vouchers, long service awards, a Cycle to Work Scheme, staff lottery and more. 


Marketplace:

Regional Lines
In response to our customers' needs we stock many regional lines throughout the company.  We feel that it is important to support our local suppliers wherever possible. 
 

Community:

Charitable Giving
Since 2006 our colleagues have raised more than £2.8m for the NSPCC. In addition, our stores undertake a range of fundraising for good causes in the communities they serve and utilise the resources of the company’s charitable fund, the Blakemore Foundation, to supplement this. 

Employee Volunteering
During the 2015/16 financial year, Blakemore Retail employees donated 5,187 hours of work time to volunteering in the community. Staff undertook a wide range of community work across the company's trading area, including painting community centres, creating allotments in schools, reading volunteering and store study tours. 
 

Environment:

Energy Efficiency
Blakemore Retail has introduced Smart Metering across its estate to monitor and ultimately reduce energy usage. We have also placed increased focus in recent years upon the introduction of energy-efficient refrigeration and lighting in our stores. 

Carrier Bag Usage
Blakemore Retail has a levy upon single-use carrier bags to encourage shoppers to utilise reusable bags and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. The proceeds of this charge are donated to the Blakemore Foundation. 

Packaging
The company uses packaging that is 100% recyclable in all of its Food to Go departments. Our stores also separate and return packaging to A.F. Blakemore's recycling centre.
